GIGS PHOTOS MUSIC REVIEWS HAMMERHEAD offers a contemporary retelling of the music from the late ‘50s and ‘60s hard bop movement through an assortment of original compositions and classic arrangenments of tunes from that period.. If you have a passion for jazz, HAMMERHEAD is the line-up to see. They play great original compositions penned by Jason Bruer, Todd Hardy and Tim Bruer and re-workings of classics like Pensativa, Hammerhead, One by One, and Mosaic – and it’s all good. Wayne’s World, Jason Bruer’s homage to Wayne Shorter is full of tight curves. In his composition A blues of many hues, the Blues, Tim Bruer and his piano become one. On tenor and alto respectively, Bruer and Robertson play saxophone like a drive down the Santa Monica coastline – smooth curves, while negotiating some serious bends in the road. Todd Hardy’s trumpet sets a blow-torch on every tune – this is jazz to set the dance floor on fire! ‘Hide hitter’ Duncan Archibald’s drumming delivers a big, sound that splashes serious groove over Wayne Shorter tracks like The Summit. Thelonious Monk’s music demands a musician bare his or her musical soul and savvy and HAMMERHEAD steps up to deliver a crazy-good version of bye ya’. Mark Harris’s Bass weaves it all together to blend serious and delicious. ‘Just Coolin’ was slang for ‘hanging out’ when Hank Mobley penned his track in 1959, which describes the vibe at a HAMMBERHEAD gig. Their compositions and these classic tunes irons the creases out of your day. HAMMERHEAD is a tight outfit that peels back the layers of jazz. They play with soul, and instrumental savvy. It’s hard bop, it’s solid, and it’s seriously delicious.

Hammerhead play a mix of original tunes inspired by the compositions of the '50s and '60s hard bop movement as well as fantastic arrangements of some of the great music from that period. The originals, penned by Jason Bruer, Todd Hardy and Tim Bruer, whilst retaining the essential elements of the ‘Hard Bop’ movement, reflect a more contemporary and eclectic approach incorporating swing, latin and funk stylings. Together with great arrangements of classic bop tunes, Hammerhead play with a spirit and energy that has won the sextet rave reviews from their recent performances in Sydney at Venue 505 where they regularly perform and also at the Sound Lounge/SIMA as part of the international Jazz Festival.
